The Informal meeting of the Working Party on General Affairs of the Council of the European Union will be held on 10th and 11th May in Sofia. The event makes part of the Calendar of the Bulgarian Presidency. Representatives of EU Member States, representatives of the European Commission, the General Secretariat of the Council and the European External Action Service will participate in the meeting.
The meeting will be focussed on the opportunities for stimulating active citizens' participation in the political debate in the context of the upcoming 2019 European elections. The issue is particularly important on the eve of the next European elections in the context of the current challenges facing the EU - Brexit, the rise of Euroscepticism and the traditionally low turnout in European elections.
The first day of the programme includes a meeting with the members of the Committee on European Affairs and Control of the European Funds at the 44th National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria and an informal meeting of the working party.
On the second day of their visit in Bulgaria, the delegates will have the opportunity to visit Plovdiv as part of the cultural program accompanying most events in the calendar of the Bulgarian presidency of the Council of EU and aimed at promoting Bulgarian history, culture and tourism. In Plovdiv, the experts from the Member States will be welcomed by the Deputy Mayor of the city, Mr. Stefan Stoyanov.
